A new study links a certain form of sexual activity to a potentially fatal form of cancer.
The topic of oral sex is often undercover, but it was recently exposed to potentially have a dangerous side effect in the form of oral cancer.
According to scientists, the connection could explain why some young adults are developing the rare disease through the human papilloma virus.
"The receiver is getting the virus because we now know it's not passed just through semen and vaginal secretions but through saliva," said Dr. Harold Laski.
Most women already know HPV can develop into cervical cancer.
However, now, scientists believe it could also cause oral tumors for men and women. That came as somewhat of a surprise because most people thought only cigarettes and alcohol could cause the disease.
"What it tells people is that they have to be careful," Laski said.
Researchers said the odds are against those who have had oral sex with six or more partners because the chance of developing oral cancer goes up 250 percent.
"I think it's eye opening, and the truth is out there. Maybe they need to be educated," said Beth Curtis.
Education and protection are the key. Condoms limit the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and scientists now said they could protect from cancer, too.
