Karmanos Cancer Institute was pleased with the ruling issued today by Judge Gershwin A. Drain, denying that a temporary restraining order be placed against the Institute. We are fully willing to comply with Judge Drain's recommendation that Karmanos and the DMC continue discussions. As we have said from the beginning, it is our objective to continue to negotiate in good faith and build upon our strong partnership affiliation with the DMC.
Karmanos hopes to resolve the issue with the DMC prior to an evidentiary hearing scheduled July 2 by Judge Drain. Whether resolution is reached before or after this court date, we are confident that Karmanos Cancer Institute will succeed with its plans to expand a world-class cancer center for the residents of Detroit, southeastern Michigan and beyond.
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is one of 39 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States. Caring for more than 6,000 new patients annually on a budget of $216 million, conducting more than 700 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials, the Karmanos Cancer Institute is among the nation's best cancer centers. Through the commitment of 1,000 staff, including nearly 300 faculty members, and supported by thousands of volunteer and financial donors, the Institute strives to prevent, detect and eradicate all forms of cancer.
