House Administration Committee Chairwoman Juanita Millender-McDonald died of cancer early Sunday morning, her office announced Sunday evening.
Millender-McDonald, who was 68, died at her home in Carson, Calif., of an undisclosed form of cancer. Last week, she had been granted a congressional leave of absence until May 25 to recuperate from her treatment.
First arriving in the House after a March 1996 special election, she represented the 37th District of southern Los Angeles County and was serving her sixth full term in Congress. California election procedures give the governor, Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, 14 days to set a date for a special election to fill the seat in the heavily Democratic district.
